Day six in the civil trial of the homicide of Shirley Carter began Monday with the continuation of the testimony of husband Bill Carter which began on Friday.

Part of the trial is establishing a timeline of the morning of the murder. The jury was shown a video of Bill Carter showing how long it would take him to load his semi with corn at a neighbor’s farm miles away which coincides with the timeline he gave for his whereabouts the time of the murder. During cross examination, Bill stated to the jury he had paid close to $700,000 in legal fees for the lawsuit against his son and stated he was not asking the jury for any money, he just wants justice for Shirley’s death.

Jason Carter’s lawyer showed discrepancies to Bill between his trial statements and interviews with DCI and private investigators, including contradictions about Jason’s emotions and mindset the day of the murder. During Friday’s testimony, Bill stated not seeing Jason cry at all the day of the murder, but when interviewed by DCI and private investigators, he stated five different times that Jason was crying and was out of his head. When asked why he changed his story, Carter said he had not had any sleep and had been in shock.

Monday also included Special Agent Mark Ludwick with the DCI being recalled to the stand. He testified that he had conducted a test that showed someone could have fit the same missing rifle from Bill Carter’s gun cabinet in the engine compartment of an identical make and model truck as the one owned by Jason Carter. Ludwick told the jury the rifle could fit in the engine compartment with ease and the truck could have been driven for a long time without any damage being caused to the truck or rifle.

Dr. Sridhar Natarajan, a Forensic Pathologist from Lubbock, Texas was called to the stand and gave expert analysis of the crime scene, including path of the bullets, damage caused to Shirley Carter, as well as an explanation as to the temperature of Shirley’s body when found.

The last witness called was Brandon Smith, who knew both Jason and Bill Carter as a Ag Sales Person at John Deere in Knoxville. Smith stated he had known Bill since he was ten and considered both friends. Smith told the jury he remembered a conversation with Jason in which Jason stated he could never go into farming with his dad Bill because of his mom. When asked why he couldn’t work with his mom Jason allegedly said, “she’s a bitch.”

The trial continues Tuesday.
