Millions around the world are expected to watch the next installment of one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time this weekend.

Locally, fans were lining up and braving the cold to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi for first showings at Pella Cinemas and the Knoxville Grand Theater.

A group of friends from Pella were camping out on the Molengracht in anticipation of the movie, including Jonathan Heerema, Rollins Kendall, Dakota Shalin, and Aric Lemons. They’ve been parked in a tent since around 9 Thursday morning, and say they’ve done this before–for The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Rogue One.

“We’ve been planning this since the last Star Wars movie, I’ve put in my PTO for work for this day back in August, so there was no way work was going to take me out of this, we’ve been doing this for the past two movies and there’s no reason to stop now,” Heerema says.

“We’ve been coming here since we were back in high school, we were juniors when we heard Forces Awakens was coming out, and we left at noon on the day to come here, and just for nostalgia now we come back for every new Star Wars,” Lemons says.

According to industry estimates, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to gross nearly $425 million worldwide on its opening weekend.
