Both favorites held serve last night in Indianola as the Indians beat the Pella High girls basketball team 63-46, while the Little Dutch boys beat Indianola 80-49 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Grace Berg scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Indians pulled away from the Lady Dutch in the second quarter and withstood a third quarter charge to win comfortably.
Emily Holterhaus had a 14-point 12-rebound double-double for Pella, Chloe Van Vliet had 12 points and Grace Held added 10. Pella drops to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
The Pella boys rode their big man to victory last night, getting a monster 28-point 14-rebound effort from 6’6” Nick DeJong. Leading by just four early in the second quarter, a 12-0 run put the Little Dutch in control.
After losing their first game of the season Tuesday to Fairfield, coach Derek Schulte says that it was nice to see his team grow in last night’s victory.
“You never want to have to take a loss to do that. But when you do, you only have two choices. We can either sit and stew about it and not get better or we can come back for two days and practice and get better. I thought our guys’ response was good and I thought we had a sense of urgency tonight that we didn’t carry possession to possession on Tuesday night, so that was good to see.”
Pella improves to 5-1 overall with the win and stays perfect in Little Hawkeye Conference play at 3-0.
Up next for both the Lady Dutch and the Little Dutch is a trip to Norwalk on Tuesday night.
