On Friday, Jason Carter was found liable in the 2015 death of his mother, Shirley Carter.

On Sunday, Jason Carter was arrested and charged with first degree murder. Monday, Jason Carter pleaded not guilty to the first degree murder charge in which he is accused of killing his mother Shirley on the morning of June 19th, 2015. Surrounded by his lawyers with wife Shelly sitting behind him, Jason Carter received a one million dollars cash or surety (SURE-ih-tee) bond set by Judge Martha Mertz with the stipulation that if Carter is able to post bond he will then forfeit his passport. Carter’s lawyers had requested the bond be reduced to $250,000. Carter will be back in court Friday for a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m.

Also on Monday the attorney for Jason Carter, Steve Wandro held a press conference at his firms location in Des Moines. During the press conference Wandro told the media different reasons as to why his client had lost the civil trial. Wandro says in his opinion there is no doubt that law enforcement was working “hand in glove” with the plaintiffs in this case. Wandros stated that anyone in the courtroom would have seen law enforcement working and passing notes to the plaintiffs. Wandro says because of that “they took a thumb to the scales of justice and made it unfair.”

According to Wandro the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations undermined the justice system and he is confident the criminal trial will bring to light evidence that could not be used in the civil trial that will clear Jason Carter.

A press conference is also scheduled for 11 a.m. today in Des Moines for the attorneys who represented Bill Carter.
