It is the coldest start to a new year on record.

According to the National Weather Service, a record low of 15 below zero set in 2010 was snapped this morning, as the air temperature dropped to 22 below, with an estimated wind chill of -43 recorded at 7 a.m.

Sunday’s high of two below zero was also the coldest on record, snapping a 1974 record of zero.

A chilly week is set to continue through Friday, with daytime highs struggling to reach double digits and overnight lows below zero in the forecast.
