As record cold temperatures hit Marion County residents are reminded to stay safe while trying to stay warm.

According to the National Fire Protection Association space heaters account for two of every five home heating fires and four out of five home heating fire deaths. Chief Jim Mitchell with Knoxville Fire and Rescue tells KNIA/KRLS News people should be conscious of where they place their space heaters and under your desk at work is probably not one of the best spots. Mitchells says find a place that is out in the open with no clutter around it. Placing things that can burn too close to heating equipment or placing heating equipment too close to things that can burn, was the leading factor contributing to the start of fatal home heating fires and account for more than half of home heating fire deaths.
