It was a trying night for the Pella basketball teams as they wrapped up their first round in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

The Lady Dutch fell 52-51 and the boys lost 61-52 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Pella’s girls went blow-for-blow with the Fillies in the girls contest featuring 18 lead changes and ties. Taking a six-point advantage with just over 4 minutes remaining, DCG rattled off a 12-2 run in the final minutes until Emily Holterhaus hit a buzzer-beating three when down by four.

Head Coach Jerod Garland tells KNIA/KRLS Sports they lost steam to an impressive DCG team that used aggressive defense to cool down the Lady Dutch. The girls were led by a 24 point performance from Holterhaus.

Pella’s boys never got anything going from the opening tip, turning the ball over nine times in the first quarter to give DCG a comfortable cushion they never let go off in the nightcap. Coach Derek Schulte says it was a rough night all the way around. Pella was paced by 12 points from Nick DeJong.

The girls fall to 8-4 and 4-3 in the conference–good for 4th, while the boys drop their third game in a row to get to 6-6 and 3-4 in their first round through the Little Hawkeye. Both teams make the short turnaround and head to Monroe for a girls-boys doubleheader at 1 p.m.
