Pella Historical Society welcomed local residents who survived Nazi Germany’s occupation of Holland to share their stories after a movie showing Monday night.

An audience of approximately 120 came to watch “Wartime in Winter”, the story of the Netherlands under Nazi occupation. Following the movie, a panel of residents including Ria Branderhorst, Tom De Vries, Carrie Van Walbeek, and Teunies Van Walbeek–who all lived in Holland during World War II, spoke about the turbulent time and stories of their survival of the German occupation. They shared anecdotes about hunger due to food rationing implemented by the Germans, fellow Dutch citizens that were Nazi-sympathizers, the loss of loved ones due to the war both in Europe and overseas, as well as their journey to the United States.

Pella Historical Society hosted the film showing and discussion as part of their history series. Click the audio player below to hear the presentation.
