The Pella City Council scheduled a special city election for a potential municipal telecommunications utility at a special meeting Monday evening.

The council set May 1st as a day voters can authorize the city to move forward with developing a potential internet utility in the community. A feasibility study is ongoing to determine the best way forward for the city council if they are permitted to proceed with the project.

The referendum would read, “Shall the City of Pella, in the County of Marion, State of Iowa, be authorized to establish a Municipally-Owned telecommunications utility?”

Council did not establish a timeline or discuss a direction regarding the potential utility.
