If felt more like the heart of winter than the beginning of spring throughout Iowa this morning as record low temperatures were broken around the state.

According to the National Weather Service, the thermometer dropped to 13 degrees at 5 a.m. in Marion County, with a wind chill estimated at one below zero. That breaks a 16-year old record low of 16 degrees. More records for cold could be broken overnight Friday into Saturday morning, as the current low mark of 16 degrees was set in 1936, and the current forecast has temperatures dipping to the mid-teens that morning. Many outdoor events have been postponed or cancelled Saturday morning.

Light snow is possible Friday as well, with better chances for accumulation coming this Sunday. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS and visit kniakrls.com for the latest weather information.
