A suspended sentence was handed down Thursday to 24-year-old Eric Schoonover, who was found guilty on two felony charges, possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver more than 5 grams and eluding, among many other misdemeanor charges.
Schoonover was arrested in February after stealing a car in Oskaloosa, and leading police on a high-speed chase through Marion County before being apprehended in Warren County. Schoonover appealed to the judge that a limited criminal history and a desire to overcome an addiction to methamphetamine would allow him to contribute to society if he was allowed to avoid prison time.
The State of Iowa recommended prison time be served, citing the danger to public safety during the high-speed chase, however over their objection Schoonover was ultimately given a suspended sentence of 10 years for felony count one and 5 years for felony count two to be served concurrently on the conditions of; 3 years of probation, completing a drug treatment program, and maintaining employment or enrollment in an education program.
If any of those conditions are not met, the prison term will be enforced. Schoonover will remain in the Marion County Jail until a treatment center has an open spot.
