A heat advisory is in place for most of Central Iowa through Sunday.

Daytime temperatures are expected to climb into the mid 90s, with heat index values topping 100 degrees through Sunday evening. Additionally, overnight lows are only forecast to drop into the mid 70s.

South winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph are forecast through Saturday afternoon. The stronger winds lead to an increased risk of dehydration. Residents are reminded to drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade if you work or have sports activities outside, and wear lightweight clothing, and to never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute, as well as know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

High temperatures and clear skies are likely to lead to elevated ozone levels as well, which may negatively impact air quality. The Department of Natural Resources recommends that Iowans with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the afternoon and evening.
