We have finally arrived at the number one sports moment for Knoxville during the 2017/2018 school year…and would you believe it was a tie? Let us first go back to January 23rd in a game that will forever be known as “The Comeback.” The Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad trailed Eddyville-Blakesburg 64-56 with 1:20 remaining. A three by Katie Keitges would cut the lead to five at 64-59. After a missed free throw by the Rockets, Maggie Wilkins drained the shot to cut the lead to 64-61 with just 58 seconds remaining. After Eddyville went 1/2 at the line to get the lead back to four, Wilkins drove the lane for a lay up to cut the lead to 65-63. Another missed free throw by Eddyville allowed Knoxville another possession and Wilkins splashed a three to give Knoxville a 66-65 advantage. A steal by Alex Griggs on the inbounds and subsequent foul put Griggs on the line where she calmly made both shots to give Knoxville a 68-65 lead. The Panthers had to play defense one final time for the final few seconds of the game. Three days later Knoxville would put away Centerville early to clinch the outright South Central Conference title. The other number one sports moment at Knoxville was on the bowling lanes. The Panthers boys finished third at state this past winter scoring 2,912 pins behind champion West Delaware and runner-up Charles City. The Panthers also put two bowlers in the top ten as Tanner Mason placed fourth and Keegan McCarty was sixth.
