A Knoxville student has made it to the semifinals of the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2019.
Elliott Schmidt from Knoxville High School is one of about 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual scholarship selection; some 7,500 scholarships will be offered next spring — worth more than $31 million. Students qualify by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; now, Elliott and the school must submit a detailed application with information on academic record, participation in school and community activities, and leadership abilities. He must also submit an essay, and earn SAT scores which confirm his earlier performance. Winners will be announced beginning in April.
