The Pella cross country teams saw first hand the best teams in Iowa and the Midwest at the 13th annual Heartland Classic, this year held at Central College.
Pella’s girls were 13th, and the boys were 28th in a field loaded with ranked opponents. The Lady Dutch placed behind Class 4A’s best teams, including No. 1 Johnston, No. 2 Waukee, No. 4 Southeast Polk, No. 5 Dowling, No. 6 Valley, and No. 8 Roosevelt. Pella was paced by Caroline McMartin (23rd overall, 20:29.4), followed by Makayla Kruse (58th, 21:26.3) and Chelsea Jorgensen (59th, 21:26.6). The girls finished 75 points ahead of No. 5 in 3A DCG.
The boys were also in a field with the No. 1, 2, 4, 5, 12, and 13 ranked teams in 4A, and No. 3 in 3A Marion. Pella was led by Drew Van Hauen (18:22.5, 112th), Mason Johnston (18:47.7, 146th), and Thomas Gaul (18:50.8, 150th).
They will next be in action Tuesday at Newton.
