At this week’s Policy and Planning meeting following regular business, the Pella City Council will consider potentially adding health insurance options for the council and mayor.

In a staff memo, the council received details about how other cities provide the service, if at all, and outlines the rules to pass an ordinance as it relates to providing coverage. The council would have to adopt the ordinance by November of 2019 for it to begin the following term, after elections that month.

Also at policy and planning, the council will discuss a wide range of potential zoning changes proposed by elected officials, boards, and city staff. Among those under consideration to pass to the city’s planning and zoning commision is allowing trade schools, as well as events, wedding receptions, and conference meetings in the Central Business District, decreasing the size of the CBD, allowing digital signage in the two-mile extraterritorial zoning area, and allowing for administrative review of certain requests to streamline the development process.

No formal action takes place at Policy and Planning, and the items are only up for discussion.

The Pella City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Public Safety Complex on Liberty Street.
