While it was a chilly, rainy morning for most of the event, the Pella Fire Department was supported by a large crowd Saturday morning at the department’s 2nd annual breakfast.
Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom tells KNIA/KRLS News 925 people came out to make a donation and eat breakfast served by Pella Fire, with the meal provided by numerous local businesses. He’s thankful for those who braved the conditions to enjoy a morning filled with fellowship among the area community. The event was held as part of the kickoff to National Fire Prevention week, which Van Gorkom says is an important time to remember how to prevent tragedy when a fire happens, starting with keeping fire extinguishers, escape plans, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide monitors up-to-date.
In addition to a meal, activities for kids were held inside the firehouse, and the Pella Police Department hosted the “What You Don’t See” trailer for parents in attendance.
Proceeds from the event will go towards a UTV for Pella Rural Fire Calls, to support the department in brush and grass fires otherwise hard to reach with larger trucks.
