A new support group for persons diagnosed with diabetes and their families is starting at Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, just in time for Diabetes Awareness Month in October.

The support group is open to diabetes patients, persons at risk of developing diabetes and their loved ones; it now meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Knoxville Hospital, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Those who have diabetes have much to deal with, from watching their diet and sugar intake to side effects such as circulatory or vision problems.

Kari Paige is Nutritional Services Director for Knoxville Hospital and Clinics; she tells KNIA/KRLS News the group will provide necessary information for diabetes patients, as well as comfort from others dealing with the disease.

“This is more of a support side for both the patient, the person struggling with diabetes; but also we welcome their spouse or any other friend or family member that they have that’s kind of helping them…or maybe they’re also struggling themselves,” she says.

Paige says anyone affected by diabetes may join at any time; further information and assistance is available through the hospital’s Diabetes Center.
