A 17-year-old Pleasantville boy was killed last night in a crash shortly before 8:00 p.m.

Authorities say Steven Fernandez was in a 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup going northbound on 43rd Avenue near the Pleasantville city limits when the vehicle entered the west ditch and began to roll. He was ejected during the rollover, and the vehicle came to rest on its top.

The road surface was 90% ice and snow packed, and the State Patrol reports the vehicle was travelling too fast for the road conditions.

Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pleasantville PD, Pleasantville Emergency Services, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the State Medical Examiner, and possibly other agencies assisted at the scene.

The senior class at Pleasantville High School will hold a candlelight vigil in his honor this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the school.
