A Knoxville High School student is one of 100 from across Iowa who have been chosen as finalists in a contest sponsored by the Iowa State Bar Association.

Senior Nyan Baker is one of over a thousand students from across Iowa which took part in the “Know Your Constitution” project; he took a 50-question test, with an essay question, concentrating on constitutional law.

Baker tells KNIA/KRLS News he’s keenly interested in the law, and found the subject fascinating; and the trickiest part of dealing with the Constitution is interpreting it.

“Biggest issue with it is, sometimes certain articles or issues are kind of vague when it comes to the wording of the Constitution, and so it’s kind of open for interpretation,” Nyan says. “And the biggest thing is, you need to kind of find almost supporting facts or supporting precedent that really would support your position, when it comes to answering (the) kind of questions that are left open for…debate.”

Nyan and the other finalists will be honored at a luncheon on January 11th at the West Des Moines Marriott, featuring as guest speaker Justice Susan Christensen of the Iowa Supreme Court.
