In the span of one week, the Pella boys basketball team knocked off the co-defending Little Hawkeye Conference champions, while the girls claimed their fifth straight victory in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS Friday.

The Little Dutch came back from an early hole to control the final half in a 69-61 win over consensus preseason No. 1 Oskaloosa, while the Lady Dutch cruised to a 60-15 win.

The dunk-o-meter in a loud, packed Indians gym was ticking up rapidly early, as were the blocked shots coming from seven-footer Xavier Foster, putting the Dutch in a 20-10 hole after the first eight minutes.

And while the deafening roars of the rival crowd and the slams early could have sent the Dutch packing, Pella surged with a 21 point 2nd quarter in which they held the Indians to just 10 points, claiming a slim halftime lead they would only briefly lose once and mostly extend in a dominating second half.

Head Coach Derek Schulte says the entire 10-man rotation contributed yet again, especially when he sent in a bench-heavy lineup in the 2nd period, which sparked a pivotal run.

Pella’s Logan Shetterly “went off” yet again, scoring 24 of his 26 points in the final 24 minutes and draining numerous NBA range threes, while John Oltman continued to be a sharpshooter from range en route to a 17 point performance. The Dutch were also 13 of 15 from the free throw line.

The red-hot Lady Dutch opened the game on a 19-0 run in the first ten minutes in their dominating victory to open the night.

Pella forced 23 turnovers, 13 of which were steals. Emily Holterhaus scored 19 points, collected 11 rebounds–seven offensive, and six pickpockets; Grace Held added 16 points and five steals, and Madison Naig dropped in 12.

Pella’s boys are 6-2, 4-1, and in a tie for the conference lead, while the Lady Dutch improve to 6-3 and land in a tie for 2nd place in the LHC standings heading to winter break.
