Those who received a bit of cash in their stockings can use that money to support non-profit organizations, and in turn, improve their tax situation–if they itemize deductions.

Brett Nikkel with Van Maanen, Sietstra, Meyer, and Nikkel says the only effective way to improve taxes this late in the year is to give back. He says the move is useful for those who itemize returns, but believes the number of people who do so will be lower with a much higher standard deduction in place this year.

The IRS has yet to release when Federal taxes can be filed.
