The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Newton Friday night and came away with a sweep, the girls winning 54-41 and the boys running away with a 76-32 victory.

The Indians girls team were without leading scorer Kendall Clatt who was out due to injury, and started off slow in the first half but were carried by Lauren Blake’s 16 points leading the Indians to a 26-23 lead at halftime. Indianola scored big in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 17-7 and eventually salted the game away shooting 8-8 free throws in the second half.

The Indians boys traded blows with Newton who attempted to slow the game down as much as possible, but the Indians used 23 first half points from Evan Gauger to take a 33-22 lead at the halftime break. A monster third quarter, led by defense turned to offense by Quinn Vesey who put in 15 points in the period, led to the Indians outscoring the Cardinals 31-4 to take a commanding lead and the ventual win.

The Indians girls improve to 6-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference play, the boys are now 10-2 and 5-2 in conference play, and both teams will next play on Friday at Norwalk.
