The Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad had been waiting for over a week to clinch the South Central Conference title. The wait must have made them hungry for a blowout. The Panthers raced out to their customary fast start and quickly put Centerville in the rear view mirror in a 73-42 win over the Reddetts on Friday as heard on KNIA. Knoxville racked up 48 first half points and had a comfortable lead at the break and quickly got the lead to running clock in the second half. Coach Jim Uitermarkt told KNIA/KRLS Sports he was worried about the start since the girls had barely any gym time this week due to the weather, but those worries were quickly erased. Katie Keitges scored 27 points to lead all scorers while Alex Griggs had 12 and Maggie Wilkins added 11. Knoxville is now 13-3 on the season and 10-0 in the South Central Conference. The boys found themselves in a 15 point hole in the second half, and managed to nearly climb all the way out, but a missed three at the buzzer sent the Panthers home with a 65-63 loss to Centerville on Friday. The Panthers got back in the game with aggressive defense and full court pressure in the second half. Kieren Nichols scored 23 points for Knoxville while R.J. Roberts had 21. Knoxville is now 8-7 on the season and 7-3 in the conference. The girls will travel to Eddyville-Blakesburg tonight while the boys will wait until Monday when Grinnell visits for their next game.
