The Indianola City Council recommended to the Iowa Department of Transportation that it not restripe Highway 92 during the regrading project coming this summer, but still remains committed to working with the DOT on improving the safety of the road. Indianola City Manager Ryan Waller tells KNIA News certain safety aspects need to be addressed before any restriping should occur.

“I think the biggest thing that the council and staff took away from the dialogue with the DOT and the community on the proposal, was there are still some safety concerns with the backup and stacking during the morning and afternoon student drop-off and pickup near the middle school and high school. I don’t think that was satisfactorily addressed, especially with that being the area for the balloon classic and other events for the city, so there is definitely a concern about the impact on the traffic in that area.”

Since the road is under the jurisdiction of the DOT, the ultimate decision will be made by them, but the DOT indicated early in the process they would accept the decision of the city council.
