Fourteen area wrestlers competed at day one of the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines and a lot of individuals found success.

Indianola opened the day in the class 3A session. Ryder Downey at 106lbs and Nick Bonanno at 145lbs came out victorious in their lone match to advance to the quarterfinals today. Brennan Meacham at 170lbs lost his first match but came back with a fall in the first consolation round to stay alive in the tournament. Three Pleasantville wrestlers competed in class 1A with Cael Lester winning by tech fall at 160lbs. Cale Anthony lost by fall at 220lbs but returned the favor in his second match with a pin of his own. Matthew Kauffman saw his season come to a close losing a pair of matches by fall. PCM closed out the day in the class 2A session. Colby Tool at 145lbs, Wes Cummings at 160lbs, and Jarron Trausch at 170lbs all won their first contest to advance. Payton Drake at 120lbs and Lucas Roland at 182lbs each lost their first match but rallied to win the second. Landon Fenton was unable to go at 113lbs, as he lost both of his matches by injury default. Cody Wallace at 152lbs and Jace Smith at 285lbs fell in both of their contests.

Another busy day at Wells Fargo arena begins at 9 a.m. this morning with 10 area wrestlers still competing.
