One person died and another was injured in a crash that shut down part of Highway 163 in Prairie City this morning.

The Iowa State Patrol reports 83-year-old Kathryn Eileen McLain of Colfax was killed after an initial investigation determined she drove her 1998 Mercury Villager out onto Highway 163 from a stop sign at Prairie Avenue at approximately 7:15 this morning and pulled into the westbound lanes. The driver’s side was then broadsided by a 1995 Honda Civic driven by Greg Leonard Weldon, 58, of Knoxville.

Weldon was transported to Pella Regional Health Center by Monroe Rescue personnel, and the extent of his injuries have not been released. Prairie City Fire and Rescue also assisted. The Iowa State Patrol is handling the investigation. Traffic was redirected for over an hour through Prairie City this morning as crews investigated and cleared the scene.
