The No. 15 ranked Central College softball team started the season in Tucson, Arizona on Monday. The Dutch split their games, Saint Marys 16-1 and falling to Case Western Reserve 8-0 in five innings. Central’s offense exploded to the tune of 19 hits in their victory. Sarah Sponder hit two home runs in drove in five runs, and Pella alumna Sarah Tallman had five hits and a stolen base. Mariah Fritz earned the win in relief, giving up three hits in 2 ⅔ innings. Fritz could not contain Case Western Reserve in game two, giving up eight earned runs, and the Dutch offense couldn’t get anything going, just getting three runners on base.
