The recent weather events have caused damage to Warren County roads, forcing the Warren County Board of Supervisors to put in place a ten ton embargo on all unpaved roads for ten days, which began on March 11th. The decision came at the recommendation of the Warren County Engineer’s Office, as the recent precipitation combined with the spring thaw was creating more damage than could be repaired at a reasonable rate. All Warren County school transportation districts are also on hard-surface routes only. Sarah Rosenberger with TRM Disposal in Indianola tells KNIA News the embargo affects trash pickup on unpaved roads. If customers need pickup service, they can call the TRM Disposal office, and can then arrange a pickup from a hard surface road.

Here is a statement from the Warren County Engineer’s Office:
“We have had record-breaking snowfalls in the month of February, higher than normal precipitation, and cold temperatures which continued into March. The Secondary Road Department has driven nearly every gravel road, and we can all agree they are not in the best shape. It can also be difficult to place our heavy machinery on the roads without tearing up even more miles of roadway. Currently, our main focus is hauling and spreading gravel with every truck available as weather and roadway conditions permit. We have also asked our motor grader operators to work put in overtime throughout the coming days to further accelerate our maintenance operations.

We are putting every resource available into gravel this year and into the future to improve and maintain our gravel roads. However, as is characteristic for this type of year, there is a layer of frost just below the surface of the roadway. This layer will continue to trap moisture near the surface until it can finally thaw and allow the surface water to drain. Furthermore, rain is forecasted this week and the snow continues to melt. It will take a few good drying days before we all see major improvements in road conditions. We ask that all gravel road drivers use caution, drive safely, and bear with us as our spring thaw continues.”
