While the Pella City Council is planning on a large surplus for the upcoming fiscal year, that could change based on one of the key priorities for the city moving forward. Assistant City Administrator Corey Goodenow says the cushion was built into the city’s nearly $45 million budget to prepare for a potential telecommunications utility. Currently, City Administrator Mike Nardini says after receiving a presentation of the business plan, staff is undergoing a “due diligence” phase as they begin to sort out potential financing and bids for council’s consideration later this year. In May 2018, Pella citizens gave approval to the city council to proceed with a municipal utility that includes internet, TV, and phone service with a vote of 93% in support of the project.
