The Central College baseball team had a rough afternoon Saturday at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City falling to Coe in the first American Rivers Conference doubleheader of the season 16-5 and 7-1.

As heard on KRLS, in game one a disastrous second inning spelled doom for the Dutch, as the Kohawks put up 10 runs in that frame to open up a 12-0 lead and continued to tack on in the later innings for the 16-5 victory. Tanner Wood gave Dutch fans something to cheer about with a bases clearing three run double in the fifth and freshman Ben Wallace sent down all six batters he faced in relief. Garrett Saunders and Trevor Kimm had a pair of hits while Zach Edwards took the loss for Central giving up 10 runs and securing just three outs.

In the nightcap sloppy defense and cold bats loomed large in a 7-1 defeat. A pair of errors helped the Kohawks put up a five spot in the third inning and that’s all Coe’s starting pitcher Jack Greene needed, as he tossed seven innings of scoreless ball. Nick Long went six innings for the Dutch giving up five runs, but only two earned, to take the loss. Kimm brought home the only Central run with a double in the eighth.

The Dutch fall to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in conference and they welcome Wartburg for a weekend series starting Friday for the home opener.
