Sunday night’s house fire in Knoxville began when a child started playing with fire; although this particular incident wasn’t serious, the Knoxville Fire Department is reminding parents there’s never a bad time to teach their children about fire safety.

Lt. Jackson Agan from the fire department tells KNIA/KRLS News the best preventative measure is to keep anything which can be used to start a fire out of the reach of children.

“I know there are a lot of times there’s drawers that are (easily) accessible for kids to get to that have matches, lighters, anything like that. It’s a good idea to keep those put away. If you are a smoker, make sure you keep your lighters on (your) person so kids can’t get to them,” Lt. Agan says.

Parents should reinforce the message that fire can hurt them and cause damage, and they should not use anything which can start or spread a fire.

The Knoxville Fire Department offers programs for classes each year, and always has pamphlets with information for parents to use while teaching their children to avoid danger with fire.
