The rich tradition of domination continued for the Pella track and field teams after they swept the Gilbert District meet Friday.

Pella’s girls scored 203 points and the boys racked up 175 to claim the first place banners for the event, with the Lady Dutch automatically qualifying 18 total entries and the boys earning 12 spots at the state meet. Both teams have several athletes in the mix for at-large bids as well. Senior Nick DeJong–who swept the throwing events with 1st place finishes, looks forward to the potential that is ahead of the team after sending so many entries.

“Going as individuals and relays is cool, but just seeing your teammates succeed and having so many events going to state where we can not only make noise individually, but as team for the team state title, that’s pretty cool too,” he says.

Senior Lindsey Blommers says a lot of girls are building on the success of the past and hoping to have a strong showing next week for a chance to repeat as champions.

“Last year we were state champions, so this year we’re just really motivated to just go back and do our best,” she says.
