Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. The Indianola Police Department has lost one officer in the line of duty, William E. “Pop” Hickman in 1957, who passed away from injuries sustained while investigating a vehicle accident. Indianola Police Lieutenant Brian Hawkins and Sergeant Justin Keller traveled to Washington DC to honor the memory of Hickman, meeting his family for the National Police Officers Memorial Candlelight Vigil, where Hickman was memorialized on the National Peace Officer Memorial Wall.
