The Lady Dutch Softball team battled to snap a six-game losing streak to find their first conference win of 2019 in a doubleheader split with Newton, falling in game one 3-2 and winning the nightcap 5-3, the second which was heard on 92.1 KRLS.
After watching a 2-1 lead flip late against the Cardinals, the Lady Dutch burst for three runs in the first inning of the late evening contest, all of which came with two outs.
After one run was coughed up due to an error in the 4th, Pella came back for two more in the 5th, highlighted by an RBI double from Ella Corbin. Newton scored two in the bottom of the 7th and brought the winning run to home plate, only for Maddie Parks to save the contest in relief of Ally Almond. Maddy Rempe scored twice and stole two bases.
Across town, the Little Dutch baseball team found a pair of thrillers of their own in Newton, winning game one 8-7 in nine innings and game two 6-5.
The first contest featured the Pella bats erasing a three-run deficit in the 7th inning to tie the game, and win in extras. Noah Van Vark was 3-for-5 with two two-baggers and three runs driven in, with Ryan Mace and Drew Hillman each 2-for-4 at the plate. Parker Van Waardhuizen won his first varsity game, with Mace earning the save in a scoreless bottom of the 9th.
Mace continued his hot hitting in the nightcap, going 3-for-3 with two more doubles and Nick Grandia going 2-for-4. Tanner Dunsbergen won in a six inning, six-hit performance with five strikeouts.
Both the softball and baseball teams are 5-6 overall. Pella softball will host Knoxville in a non-conference game tonight, which can be heard live on both 95.3 KNIA and 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 7:00. The boys of summer are off tonight until they travel with the girls to Oskaloosa Wednesday.
