June is National PTSD Awareness Month. PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects close to 8 million people in the United States. About 10 percent of women will develop PTSD sometime in their lives compared with about 4 percent for men, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. About 20 percent of veterans returning from combat will be diagnosed with PTSD. Psychologist Kathryn Sharp with the Knoxville VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic tells KNIA/KRLS News PTSD isn’t something that only affects veterans. Anyone could suffer from PTSD. Sharp says anyone who has witnessed a traumatic event could possibly be suffering from PTSD. Along with National PTSD Awareness Month, National PTSD Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th. National PTSD Day is a day set aside to encourage open talk about PTSD, its causes, symptoms, and getting help for the condition.
