Area residents converged on Lake Red Rock for the 9th annual Balloonfest this weekend. Two of the four scheduled launches of hot air balloons occurred due to different types of adverse weather for ballooning Saturday morning–with pop up rain, and in the evening for a lack of wind. Pilots participated in static displays on the beach instead. A total of 38 pilots participated in competitions and other activities. Several residents filled North Overlook Beach throughout the celebration, enjoying evening entertainment, including two bands, the Night Glow and the new lighted boat parade. A record number of participants helped raise funds for the Pella, Knoxville, and Pella Christian cross country teams at the 8th annual Balloonfest 5K/10K race. Eagles Cross Country Coach Mike Buchheit says he’s thankful to the more than 200 runners and walkers who participated and made a big contribution to student athletes throughout the county.
