The Class 2A District baseball postseason continued Saturday evening as Pella Christian traveled to District 10’s top seed, West Marshall, for the district final, as aired on KRLS. In an epic pitchers’ duel that saw two lightning delays and took extra innings to finish, Pella Christian completed a combined no-hitter and defeated West Marshall 2-0 in 10 innings for the district crown. No baserunner for either team got past first base until the sixth inning. The Trojans threatened in the eighth with a runner on third, but the Eagles defense kept things in check and escaped the inning. The only runs scored came in the top of the tenth, both of which came on defensive errors in consecutive at-bats.
Pella Christian had only three base hits in the game; one each by Devin Haveman, Luke Mulder and Cole Webster. Will Dembski pitched the first 7⅓ innings, giving up no runs, no hits, four walks and struck out 12 batters. Devin Haveman came in for the final 2⅔ innings of work and is officially the winning pitcher. He gave up no runs, no hits and walked two batters.
West Marshall’s season ends with a record of 27-6. Pella Christian improves to 17-14, and are one win away from the state tournament. They will travel to Van Horne Tuesday to take on District 9 champion North Linn. Tuesday’s substate game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will air live on 92.1 KRLS.
