In one fell swoop, Central College’s women’s golf team and senior Brittany Coppess both won American Rivers Conference championships in a sudden-death playoff on October seventh in Decorah.

Steady rain made much of the Oneota Golf and Country Club unplayable, forcing cancellation of the final round of the league tournament.  But the Dutch were tied with Dubuque, and Coppess was all square with the Spartans’ Daniela Miranda, so a ten-some trudged to a wet 18th hole to settle things.

Central played the par-five in even-par, while Dubuque was two-over, and Coppess drilled a dramatic put to win the individual crown.

“I knew I won as an individual, but I didn’t realize we won as a team until Emily (Opsal) made her putt for par.  As soon as we got that figured out, and we got brought together, tears were flying.”

Central’s 10th league championship qualified the Dutch for the NCAA national meet in mid-May in Houston, Texas.  They finished 19th place in three rounds of play, while Coppess made the cut and played four rounds individually, finishing 43rd.
