The Pella City Council will hold a special work session today to discuss the future of the Pella Community Center. Council will dig deeper into an action plan given earlier this year by Short Elliott Hendrickson which provides two options to consider — build a new, 47,000-square foot facility near the Pella Aquatic Center or renovate the current facility on Union Street. No formal action will be taken by the council, however, the work session will include the pros and cons of each option and further details from the plan developed by SEH. Following discussion on the community center’s future, council will hear an update about the status of the City of Pella’s overall finances and how the budget can fit several upcoming large scale initiatives, including downtown infrastructure upgrades, the proposed municipal telecommunications utility, and the community center, which could cost more than $10 million, regardless of whatever is decided. The Pella City Council special work session begins at 6:00 this evening in the Public Safety Complex on Liberty Street, and is open to the public.
