A lack of significant precipitation since June has many in south central Iowa feeling the impacts of drier conditions. According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Report, most of Marion and Warren Counties and all of Mahaska, Jasper, and Polk Counties are listed as “abnormally dry.” Moderate drought conditions exist largely along and north of Interstate 80 regionally. After June 1st, 2018 to May 31st, 2019 rated as the wettest 12-month period in state history, much drier weather patterns have persisted throughout most of the state. In July, most of the region saw between 2-3 inches of rain, well below the typical five inches for the month, and through August 15th, less than an inch of precipitation has been recorded in most parts of the area. Chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast mainly Saturday. Stay tuned to 92.1 KRLS for the latest weather information.
