Several Pella residents have had success at the 2019 Iowa State Fair. The culinary and artistic worlds joined forces in, judged Tuesday, at the 2019 Iowa State Fair. Brenda Becker of Pella won first place and a total of $100 in cash awards and gift cards in the Adult Chocolate Sculpture class of the Beaverdale Confections Chocolate and Candy Sculptures competition. Julie Petersen of Knoxville earned second place and $50 in cash and gift cards. Becker won the other holiday cookie plate in the O Come Ye All Cookies competition and 2nd in the Christmas Cookie Plate and earned top finishes in two categories in the Cake Decorating competition. The “Haves and Have Knots” were awarded top honors in the Wood Projects competition judged prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair. Stephen Bennett of Pella won first place in two categories. Darren Pierce of Pella, Darren Bingham of Melcher-Dallas, and Denis Johansen of Knoxville swept the Canes and Gunstocks category.
