A new look Lady Dutch volleyball team edged out Ballard on the road to open the season, winning 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 28-26) in Huxley Tuesday. In a hard fought contest, the Lady Dutch had a balanced attack, with Bailey Van Voorst and Ella Corbin each tallying 10 kills, and Anna Vander Waal had 38 assists. Courtney Thompson and Payton Turner each had five service aces as well. The 1-0 Lady Dutch hit the road to the Bondurant tournament Saturday.

In a meet made up of some of the state’s biggest schools, the Pella cross country teams raced against 4A’s giants at the Ankeny Centennial Early Bird Invitational Tuesday. Pella’s boys placed 5th and the Lady Dutch were 7th in the field comprised of the large school competition. For the preseason No. 4 Little Dutch boys, they were paced by Josiah Wittenberg’s 11th place finish and 17:09 time and 28th place finish by Tony Schmitz (17:44), who was closely followed by Mason Johnston’s 31st spot result (17:48), 33rd from Thomas Gaul (17:53), and Cutler Turner (17:59) in 36th. The Lady Dutch were led by senior Caroline McMartin’s 5th place finish (19.26.8) and a 35th place race from Abigail Cutler (21:49.6). The Little and Lady Dutch are off until their home invitational on Saturday, September 7th.
