The Tulip City Showdown went down to the final set to kick off the conference season, and it was the Lady Dutch pulling off a big comeback to win 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8) and spoiling the Eagles home opener Tuesday evening.

Pella Christian opened the night with an 8-0 run in set one and held back a late Pella charge to claim victory. Set two was more of the same for the Eagles, as they put the pressure on their crosstown foes and jumped to the overall 2-0 lead.

But much like Saturday’s Bondurant tournament, the deep hole didn’t phase the Lady Dutch, as they rallied to opening leads in both sets three and four and nabbing the first four points in the decisive set five.

Molly Bolt grabbed nine of her 19 kills in the first set, and Avey Amelse had 10 kills and six aces for the Eagles. Pella was paced by Bailey Van Voorst and her 13 kills, and six kills and four aces from Meridith Rowe. The 3-4 Pella Christian team is back in action quickly on Eagle Lane Thursday against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, while the 8-1 Lady Dutch are off until they open their home gym against Indianola Tuesday.
