A stellar 2019 debut earned Central College football quarterback Blaine Hawkins the distinction of being the American Rivers Conference male athlete of the week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Hawkins was also the league’s offensive player of the week while teammate Jon Alberts was picked as the special teams player of the week. The school record for touchdown passes in a game fell as Hawkins tossed six in less than three quarters of action in a 42-12 Central victory over the University of Northwestern – St. Paul (Minn.). He was 24 of 33 for a 72.7 completion percentage, throwing for 299 yards. A first team all-conference player in 2018, this is Hawkins third offensive player of the week honor. Alberts was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra point attempts. He also averaged 52.0 yards on his eight kickoff attempts. It’s the sixth time Alberts has been recognized as the special teams player of the week, earning it twice in 2018 and three times in 2017. Central hosts DePauw University (Ind.) in Pella on Saturday at 1 p.m., hear the game live on 92.1 KRLS.
