It was far from a winter wonderland in south central Iowa, but the first measurable snow of the 2019-20 season has arrived for many — and way ahead of schedule Monday evening.

While little to no snow stuck to pavement, between a trace to up to 1 1/2 inches fell and accumulated on grassy areas and other surfaces in most of south central Iowa. Typically, the first inch of measurable snow of the season doesn’t come until around or after Thanksgiving, according to climate data from the National Weather Service.

This may not mark the end of snow chances this week either, as brisk, cold air will greet trick-or-treaters throughout the region, with a slight to moderate chance of light snow Wednesday night into the day on Halloween. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for the latest weather information.
