Pella Christian made short work of Pleasantville in the Class 2A Region 5 volleyball quarterfinals, winning 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-17) Monday night.

The Eagles never trailed over the three sets and dominated nearly every phase, committing just seven service errors with eight aces and limiting the Trojans to just 12 kills overall with 10 blocks.

Sophomores Sarah Gritters and Avey Amelse say a combination of great serving and solid defense allowed them to stay ahead of Pleasantville throughout the three-set match.

“I’d say our serving [was a key], we got a lot of our serves in — our goal is to get 93 percent and I feel like we got pretty close to that this game,” Gritters said. “I’d say that we got a lot of our hits in and we tried to get up everything that we could and we really didn’t let many balls drop.”

“We’ve been really focusing on our serving as a key, and I thought our serving was great, and I also thought our blocking went really well — we got up on all the balls, even free balls,” Amelse said.

Pella Christian was led by seven kills and no errors from Amelse and seen kills and five blocks from Gritters. The Eagles improve to 19-20 overall and travel to No. 8 Van Buren Thursday; the Warriors had to outlast Cardinal in five sets in their playoff openers. Pleasantville’s season ends at 16-9.
