Over the past year, a Pella High School student has been participating in a competition affiliated with the World Food Prize. Joe Beukelman, a senior at Pella High, had a paper he wrote to the organization selected among just 200 students nationally as part of the Iowa Youth Institute, and in October, presented at the World Food Prize in Des Moines. Beukelman says his topic related to the struggles of Syrian refugees in obtaining life-saving insulin for diabetes. Beukelman says he was able to meet students from around the country and even from Canada as part of the experience.
