As the sun rose in Knoxville Friday morning, local veterans as well as members of the American Legion, VFW and Boy and Girls Scouts helped raise flags in the 18 degree morning air at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. A memorial tribute was held at the Veteran’s Plot after the flag raising in which Executive Director of the Marion County Commission of Veterans Affairs, Michael Kuhn spoke about the significance of Veterans Day. Following the speech Taps was played and the American Legion conducted a three round volley to commemorate the start of the Veterans Day weekend. A free breakfast for participants was also held at the VFW following the tribute. All flags at the cemetery will stay up until Tuesday, November 12th.
