The season came to a close Saturday for the Central football team. The Dutch fell 49-13 on the road against Wheaton in the second round of the playoffs, in a game aired live on 92.1 KRLS.

Wheaton scored five touchdowns in the first quarter, which is the most ever allowed by Central. The Thunder maintained that margin throughout the game, leading 42-1 at halftime. Central was fresh off the memories of a large comeback the week prior, but the Wheaton defense stifled the Dutch all afternoon.

Wheaton improves to 13-0 on the season, and will take on St. John’s in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Central’s season concludes with a record of 10-2.

The Central men’s basketball team hosted Gustavus Adolphus Saturday evening for a non-conference tuneup. A slow start for the Dutch led into a strong finish, as Central came away with an 89-79 overtime victory.

The Golden Gusties were on fire in the first half, jumping out to a 50-35 halftime lead. Central trailed by 18 with 14:11 to go in the second half, but that’s when the Dutch began their comeback. Central methodically cut into the deficit, and eventually tied the game with 1:40 to play. The teams would go into overtime tied at 77. Central outscored Gustavus 12-2 in the overtime period for the victory.

The Dutch improve to 2-4 on the season. They’ll return to conference play Wednesday evening, hosting Wartburg inside Kuyper Gymnasium. That game will be broadcast as part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader on the KRLS3 stream, beginning with pregame coverage at 5:15.
